The State of Health Insurance in Ohio

The Republican Convention is in Cleveland, OH, where ClareFolio filmed the pilot episode of Mastering Health Insurance. In the episode, insurance broker, Sandra, helped Beth, a small business owner, find coverage for herself and her family. We learned a lot about Ohioans while filming in the city.

  • How many people are covered? 93 percent of the state’s 11.5 million people were covered in 2014, which was up from 88 percent in 2013.
  • How do they get their coverage? 50 percent are covered by their employer, 21 percent by Medicaid, 16 percent by Medicare, four percent by nongroup insurance and one percent by other public programs.
  • Which employers provide coverage? 96 percent of employers with 50 or more employees offer health insurance to employees, while 37 percent with fewer than 50 employees do so.
  • What if an employer doesn’t provide coverage? 234,000 consumers enrolled in health insurance through the federal marketplace in 2015.
  • How much does it cost? 41 percent of these enrollees in Obamacare paid $100 per month in premium after any tax credits.
  • What else? 587,000 Ohioans have health insurance in 2015 through Medicaid and CHIP because of the state’s decision to expand Medicaid through the Affordable Care Act.

While Beth launches her new business, she and her family are happy to be covered. In other words, they’re Mastering Health Insurance.
