New Year. New Plan.

Many American families began the new year with a new health plan. The reasons for the change varied. Some employees changed when employers changed carriers. Other employees switched during annual enrollment. Over the holidays, parents with a new health plan shared their concerns:

• New insurance cards. Health insurers rushed to issue cards to new members. In the meantime, parents worried until they had them in their hands (and wallets). Any trip to the emergency room with an out-of-date insurance card is a parent’s worst nightmare.

• New provider networks. Provider networks look more and more alike among carriers. However, parents worried about having to change their kids’ pediatricians. Children with chronic conditions or special needs may find it especially difficult to adjust to a new doctor.

• New annual deductible. The annual deductible for family coverage varied by plan type. In 2024, it ranged from $2,770 for PPOs to $4,991 for HDHPs. Parents worried about paying the additional out-of-pocket expense, especially after the holidays.

At the start of the new year, many American families began new health plans. Hopefully, their new plans will meet their families’ personal and financial needs. It’s never easy, but these consumers are Mastering Health Insurance.
